ASMARA BELOVED
Asmara, the capital city of Eritrea, has a style and charm that delight the senses thanks to the unique blend of African, Arabic and European influences that have shaped the identity of the city. After decades of international isolation Asmara is now recognised as a treasure trove of modernist architecture from the 1930s, still preserved in the original, human scale of the city. Asmara was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017.
Published in 2004, Asmara Beloved is a hardcover coffee table book that celebrates the city and its people, documenting its architecture, cultural life, street scenes and economic endeavour. Complete with a historical introduction to the city, and featuring original poetry by Haile Bizen in Tigrinya and English, this is a book of dear memories for those who already know Asmara, and an inspiration for others yet to visit Eritrea and its unique capital.
