ASMARA BELOVED

Asmara, the capital city of Eritrea, has a style and charm that delight the senses thanks to the unique blend of African, Arabic and European influences that have shaped the identity of the city. After decades of international isolation Asmara is now recognised as a treasure trove of modernist architecture from the 1930s, still preserved in the original, human scale of the city. Asmara was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Finnish photojournalist Sami Sallinen was born in 1965 and lived in Asmara in 1996-2003.  Renowned Eritrean poet and writer Haile Bizen was born in Asmara in 1966.
